Inwood, the town of approximately 3,000 residents lying in south Berkeley County, nowadays is best known by its high school’s alias as Musselman – after the famous applesauce brand.
A Brief History
However, that wasn’t always the case. Many years ago, around 1890, Inwood was known for the famous Inwood Park which held an annual festival drawing thousands of tourists. The town also became a central transporting hub for the Cumberland Valley Railroad which eventually came to be the Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroad town was known for its crop shipments and was one of the most profitable stations for the CVRR.
It wasn’t until years later, around 1920 in which Inwood would begin to develop its popular Musselman moniker. Gray Silver, a local politician, was instrumental in the organization of a local farmland co-operative with a focus on the production of apples. The movement led to a federally funded apple harvest school and eventually lured in a group of commercial investors who ultimately established the Musselman Company in 1920 becoming the first processing plant of its kind.
Job Opportunities
Inwood is a hotbed for the mineral industry with an abundance of limestone and an active quarry in the area. The ground transportation industry is also booming with several trucking companies doing business along the Interstate 81 corridor. One major fortune 500 company, Proctor & Gamble, has established a large production and distribution complex along Tabler Station Road outside of Inwood and will support several local businesses through their operations.
Restaurants and Bars
Inwood has mostly gone untouched by the big-box commercial stores and instead relies on home grown business. Two of the best spots to eat are Viva Mexico – for some the area’s best Mexican cuisine – and the 4 Corners Club which serves an excellent lunch menu and is a common spot for locals to catch a drink. Inwood also has a chain pharmacy, a supermarket, and a few fast food restaurants to support its expanding population. Anything missing can be found within a short distance as the town is set in between Winchester, Virginia and Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Activities and Events
Inwood also features some of the best entertainment options in the Eastern Panhandle. Jay Dee’s Fun Center is a one-stop shop of numerous outdoor activities including games, go-karts, and mini-golf. Inwood is also home to one of the best locations for outdoor music and entertainment. Shiley Acres is an outdoor concert center which has brought local and national entertainment performers for over thirty years. The venue draws a variety of acts but mostly bluegrass and rock and roll. Inwood is also popular for the Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival which is held annually in October.
Real Estate in Inwood
Inwood has been deemed a high growth area and is poised for a population boom. Real estate in the area is generally priced lower than most of Berkeley County and Jefferson County with new construction developments and several local builders. The rental market in Inwood consists mostly of single-family homes with few opportunities available for small efficiency apartments.
